Do you own a car? If yes, then you must be knowing that you must maintain it properly just like changing oil, etc. Similarly, the regular maintenance of your device has its significance for keeping it secure and in proper workable condition. Effective computer maintenance practices will just ensure that your computer is running flawlessly. Not only that, it will protect your precious data as well from hackers, who are sparing no effort to sneak inside your computer. If you are in a dilemma about how to begin, then go through the following steps mentioned below and confirm whether you practice them regularly.

1. Backup

It is crucial to employ a good backup system. If possible, opt for multiple backups. Keep a few external hard drives handy to back up your computer. In the case of a Mac, the Time Machine program backs up your device by default as long as the backup drive is plugged in.

Apply the same step on your computer applying Windows Backup. Unfortunately, if anything happens to your PC, employ the hard drives for recovering your data and even upload the data into a new device when required. Nowadays, cloud backup services are the best option. A lot of options for backup are available at present. You only need to explore them.

2. Updates

Check that the operating system and the software of your device are up to date. A lot of computer operating systems feature in-built security measures.  Accordingly, updates will enhance the security of your computer, apart from fixing bugs for your operating system. Remaining up to date ensures that the device and its data are secured from both hackers and system issues.

3. Ventilation

You should place your computer in such a way so that there is proper ventilation around. Cooling is essential for the internal components and a clean computer will be more durable. If your device is too dusty, then clean the openings and keyboard with compressed air to free up some of the dust and let better cooling. In the case of a desktop, remove the side of the PC and apply compressed air to blow out the residual dust. Unplug the PC before removing the side and it is better to carry it outdoors to blow the dust-out.

4. Disk Space

Monitor your disk space closely. If the hard disk of the computer is full, then the software won’t work. Free up the space by uninstalling unwanted programs and deleting unnecessary files. In the case of Windows 7 OS, regularly clean out your temporary files. Do this by applying the Disk Cleanup tool. The box labeled Temporary Files must be checked.

5. Secure Browsing

The website you are visiting must be a trustworthy one and maintain cautiousness while putting URLs into your browser, particularly during online shopping. If you miss a single character, you may end up compromising on your data or land up on a site with unsafe content. Buy items from a reliable website of some repute. Refrain from purchasing items from an unheard company. Nowadays, identity theft has increased drastically. If you purchase something from an unknown place, then you may be a victim of identity theft.

6. Antivirus

Undeniably, this is the most pertinent one to follow as no one can ignore the importance of an efficient antivirus that frequently scans. Novel viruses pop up now and then, so frequent scanning keeps your device running properly and protects its data.

7. Strong Passwords

We hope, you all understand the relevance of a secure password. Provided that you remember them when required, always apply strong passwords (10+ characters plus symbols) and refrain from reusing them in multiple places. Frequently alter your passwords regularly and write them down in a safe place, exclusively accessed by you.

8. Observe Financials

Regularly keep a track of your financial transactions. Whenever you come across any dubious charge or unknown activity, probe immediately. If needed report the matter to the police.

9. Two-Factor Verification

Apply two-factor verification wherever applicable. Authenticators generate one-time codes, exclusively available from your registered device. This restricts other people from logging into your account, even if they know your password.

10.  Be Aware of Frauds

Don’t fall into the trap of phishing emails, coming in various forms. They are nothing but fraudulent ways to know your credentials, personal information, etc. Don’t fall into their laid trap. They may seek some CTK (call-to-action) such as Click here to know more, or download this, etc.
